I'm considering taking a year off to build an application I've been thinking about, but I'm wondering if one year is enough time to learn Ruby on Rails, especially since I have experience as a database administrator. What do you all think?

One year should be enough time, especially if you already have some programming skills. It really depends on where you're starting from and what you want to build. Some people can pick up Rails in just a month, honestly!

Since you know Python and have a data science background, that will definitely give you a head start. However, I’d advise you to maybe focus more on your Python skills or explore web frameworks that work with it, like Django. Rails has seen better days, and Python is really in demand right now.

Honestly, the best way to gauge it is to just dive in. Start a small project and see how quickly you can pick things up. There's no harm in experimenting with it first.

It's definitely doable. Rails was designed for rapid development, so if you plan your time well and stay focused, I think you’ll make great progress in a year.

If you're already comfortable coding and familiar with Ruby, Rails shouldn't be too hard to pick up. Just be aware that it has some quirks that can trip you up, so you might need to be selective about which features you use.
