I've been working with the same PC for about six years, and I want to upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5 RAM, but the recent price spike has been discouraging. Instead, I decided to upgrade my current setup. Here are my specs:
- Ryzen 7 2700x (8 cores, 16 threads)
- RX 580 (8GB)
- Corsair Vengeance RAM (2x16GB, 2400 CL16, overclocked to 2800)
- Corsair VS750 PSU (750W)
- Gaming Plus X470 motherboard
- Kingston NVMe SSD (1TB)
I use this PC mainly for video editing as part of my daily job and for gaming. Since my motherboard is on the AM4 platform, I'm considering upgrading to these components:
- Ryzen 9 5900XT (16 cores, 32 threads)
- RTX 5060 Ti (16GB) or RTX 5070 (12GB)
My goal is to ensure this setup lasts for a few more years, especially since I'm starting to make longer videos in 1080p. I need an NVIDIA GPU for compatibility with Premiere Pro. Would this upgrade be wise? Can I just swap these parts without needing to change anything else?

Make sure your case has good airflow because the motherboard's VRM isn't the best for handling a high-power CPU. However, as long as you have adequate cooling, the upgrade should work fine.
If you're doing a lot of editing, the Ryzen 9 5900XT is a solid choice. You might also want to consider looking for used Ryzen 9 5950Xs for a bit more power. Additionally, the CPU can benefit from slightly faster RAM, even 2800 CL16 should be okay for your needs, although it won't be as fast as 3200 CL16. Just remember to avoid the RTX 5060 Ti because of potential PCIe bottlenecks on your X470 motherboard. Go for the 5070 instead—it will perform better. Also, double-check your PSU; the VS series isn't very reliable, so it might be worth upgrading that too.
Upgrading to the Ryzen 9 5900XT makes sense for your needs, especially for video editing. I suggest considering the RTX 5070 to avoid compatibility issues. Just ensure you have decent cooling and check your PSU model; it seems like you have the VS650, which isn't great. Look for a reliable 650W+ PSU to support your new setup.
