Why Are My GPU and CPU Only Running at 50% While Gaming?

I was playing Remnant 2 yesterday and noticed a significant difference in FPS compared to my friend's PC. Even though we both have maxed out settings, he was getting around 150-160 FPS while I was stuck between 80-100 FPS. Upon checking my CPU and GPU usage, both were sitting at roughly 50%, with my CPU peaking at 58% and GPU at 51%. I have an NVIDIA 4070 Super and an Intel Core i7-8700k. I know my CPU isn't as strong as my GPU, but it's puzzling why both components aren't maxed out during gameplay. Could this indicate a bottleneck or is there something else at play?

What are the specs of your friend's CPU and GPU? That might help figure out the issue since their performance is way better than yours. Just curious!

He's also using a 4070 Super with the same Intel Core i7-8700k as me.

What's your motherboard's specs? I had a friend whose high-end CPU and GPU were bottlenecked because his motherboard didn't have enough PCIe lanes. After we switched his NVME to a different slot, his performance improved. Some motherboards even let you adjust lane settings in BIOS.

I had no idea that could be an issue! I’m using an ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WI-FI) for my motherboard.

You might want to check out a bottleneck calculator. Ideally, your GPU should be working at 90-100%, while your CPU usage should be 50-60% or less. If both are around 50%, your GPU might not be at full capacity. Have you tried using MSI Afterburner to boost GPU performance? It could be undervolted.

If you're unsure about Afterburner, it might take some trial and error, but definitely check if your GPU is getting enough power!

I looked up that bottleneck calculator and confirmed the CPU is weak. But if that's the case, shouldn't I see higher CPU usage? Also, I'm pretty sure my GPU isn't undervolted.
