How Much Do Bottlenecks Really Impact 1440p Gaming Performance?

I'm planning a complete PC build for next year, but right now I can only afford to upgrade a few components. I'm considering getting a GPU—specifically the Sapphire Pulse RX 9060 XT 16GB—since I think the extra VRAM will be beneficial for upcoming games, even if this VRAM might be slower than more current GPUs. I want to understand how much my old CPU will impact my gaming experience. Currently, I'm getting barely playable frame rates (around 45-65 fps) at 1440p on low settings in games like FF7 Intergrade, Elden Ring, and Spiderman Remastered. Can a powerful GPU make up for my outdated CPU, especially in less CPU-intensive games like FF7 Rebirth, which my CPU is slightly below the minimum requirements for? Here are my specs: Intel i5 4690K, XFX RX 580 8GB, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Asus Z97-A motherboard, and a Samsung Odyssey G5 1440p monitor that I just got as a gift.

Yes and no—your older CPU and RAM will definitely hold back a modern GPU, but you'll still see better performance than what you have now. Just manage your expectations, as games like Rebirth can be demanding even on more powerful setups.

So it'll at least run games, right? I mean, it won’t just crash or something?

Your CPU and GPU need to work together effectively. With a 4690K, many games will be especially limited by how fast your CPU can process. Upgrading your GPU will help with graphic settings, but the FPS may not dramatically increase. It’s a good idea to play around with your settings to see what works best for you.

Interesting! So I might not get above 60-80 fps max, huh? I guess I could just set everything to ultra to give the GPU more to do.

Honestly, bottlenecks are a real concern. I slapped an RX 6600 on an i3-3225 once and got about 20 fps in Mechwarrior 5. On an R5 5500, that same card hit around 100 fps. So it's a significant difference depending on your CPU.

Yeah, it seems like there’s a threshold—if the CPU is way too dated, it’s just not going to keep up.

Absolutely, you can lose a lot of performance with an old CPU. The GPU does handle most of the workload in modern 1440p gaming, but if your CPU is bottlenecking, you'll still hit limits even in graphics-heavy games. In short, an advanced GPU won't really make up for a weak CPU.

If you're encountering a CPU bottleneck, it won't magically make your GPU perform better. You'll still be able to crank up graphics settings, but you'll be limited by what your CPU can handle. It's something to think about for maximizing your GPU's potential.

Isn't there a way to lower resolution without messing up the display? People say 1080p on a 1440p monitor looks terrible.
