I recently had my stolen iPhone returned to me by the police, but I'm facing a big issue. The thief logged out of my Apple ID and accessed it with their own, locking me out with a new passcode. When my phone was taken, I believe they knew my passcode, as they changed my Apple ID password and removed it from Find My. I've managed to recover my Apple ID and some data from iCloud backups, but a lot of my photos weren't backed up and I really want to know if there's a way to check if they're still stored on the iPhone before I do a factory reset, which would erase everything. I've talked to Apple Support, and they say a reset is the only option. I'm hoping someone here has faced a similar situation or can confirm if there's absolutely no other way to see what's left on the device before proceeding with the reset.

At least you got your phone back! Typically, proof of purchase helps a lot in cases like this. Even if you've lost some photos, being smart about your accounts moving forward could prevent this from happening again.
I don't think there's a way around this, unfortunately. It sounds like you'll need to reset the phone completely. It sucks, but it might be time to just let go and start over. Just remember to set up Face ID or Fingerprint ID next time and protect your passcode!
