Best Solutions for Laptop Tracking Without Privacy Issues

I'm looking for effective ways to implement asset tracking for our Windows laptops. We have over a hundred of these laptops that aren't assigned to specific individuals, as employees check them out for their shifts. They're enrolled in ManageEngine MDM, but I believe it lacks historical location tracking for Windows devices. While one option could be creating a background app to periodically query ManageEngine and save the locations to a database, I've also thought about using WinAPI for geolocation. I don't see significant privacy concerns since these laptops are only used during shifts and then returned. I've had trouble finding resources on this topic, as most discussions focus on individual employees' privacy. Additionally, the background service sends notifications each time a location request is made, which isn't ideal. I'd love to hear anyone's suggestions for solutions! Thanks!

Instead of getting into all the GPS headaches, consider putting a cheap AirTag or any $20 BLE tag inside each laptop. You can log the signals with a basic USB dongle at checkout. You'll get the last seen location without the complications of MDM and it avoids privacy pop-ups.

I doubt that there's enough space inside most laptops made in the last 15 years for an AirTag though.

You should check out Prey Project; it might be exactly what you're looking for! Just be aware that it doesn't survive a system wipe, which could be a downside if you ever have to reset any laptops.

Yeah, but that's a common issue with tracking software. If the system gets wiped, you'll lose tracking capabilities.

Have you looked into Absolute? It used to be called LoJack for laptops and is integrated into most systems' motherboards. It might be a bit on the pricey side, but it’s probably your best option for reliable tracking.
