I was just trying to open Steam when my computer's fan started making a crazy noise, sounding like a hair dryer at full blast. It really scared me, so I shut it down. Now, when I turn it back on, I see a grey screen that's not displaying correctly, and it freezes when I try to log in. I'm not sure what to check first, but I'm thinking about looking inside the computer. Any ideas on what might be going on?

It sounds like you might have a buildup of dust around your fans and vents. It's a good idea to clean those out and maybe even apply some fresh thermal compound to the CPU if it hasn't been done in a while.
I saw a photo you posted of the inside, and yeah, it looks pretty dusty. If the fan over the graphics card was making noise, that could definitely be a big part of the problem. Cleaning it out could help a lot.
