Why is my gaming laptop suddenly dropping to 15 FPS?

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 15ITH6 and was comfortably gaming at 120 FPS until it suddenly dropped to just 15 FPS. I don't think it's thermal throttling since I've cleaned the fans and reapplied thermal paste, and the temperatures seem fine. I noticed that reinstalling my NVIDIA drivers temporarily fixed the issue, but after rebooting, the low FPS returned. I even updated the BIOS, which resolved the problem for a couple of days, but now I'm back to square one. It definitely feels like a software issue since reinstalling the drivers worked before, but that doesn't help anymore. I've tried various solutions suggested by AI tools, but nothing has worked. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Have you checked if your laptop is stuck in power-saving mode? That can sometimes prevent the NVIDIA GPU from being used properly. Try first updating the drivers for the integrated GPU or, if that's not applicable, go into the NVIDIA control panel and make sure you're set to high performance. Since you’ve already adjusted a lot of the power management settings, it could be worth revisiting them to ensure everything is set correctly.

It sounds like you might be dealing with thermal issues again, even if the temps seem fine right now. It’s worth monitoring the GPU activity and temperatures while gaming. I've had a similar experience with my desktop's 3080, where the frames would drop significantly until I rolled back the drivers. Also, check if you have any GPU tweaking software like MSI Afterburner that might be capping your power limits on startup. Sometimes that can kick in and mess everything up after a restart.
