Looking for Alternatives to Dovecot for a Small Mail Server Setup

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a bind. After Dovecot crashed during my upgrade from version 2.3 to 2.4, I'm on the hunt for mail server solutions that aren't so reliant on the trends of a for-profit company. Any suggestions for something that's simple and works well for a small number of users on a single server?

I think it’s worth checking out Mox—a mail server built in Go. It's super easy to configure and doesn't require a lot of hassle. You can run it standalone or in a container, and it’s just a single binary to manage. I've switched to Mox for my smaller setups and I won't go back to Dovecot + Postfix!

Before jumping ship from Dovecot, I'd say take a look at the upgrade documentation. I've seen quite a few issues come up from missing things in the manuals when going from 2.3 to 2.4. Just a thought, but you might find it easier than you think!

I appreciate the tip! I did miss some details, but to be honest, the breaking changes in a minor release really shook my confidence in Dovecot.

Have you considered Docker Mailserver? It bundles all the essentials, including Dovecot and Postfix, so you just set it up in a container. This way, you avoid the hassle of broken packages that often come with different distros. It’s quite user-friendly, especially for straightforward setups.
