I recently found an HP Compaq Elite 8300 Small Form Factor in the rain and I'm curious about how to upgrade it into a decent gaming machine. I don't currently have a displayport to HDMI adapter, so I can't boot it up to check if it works. What upgrades should I consider that won't break the bank, since I'm saving for a proper gaming PC?

If you can find the service tag, that could help pinpoint your specifications. To game on this setup, you'll also need a low-profile graphics card that doesn't require additional power. Otherwise, it might be better suited as a retro gaming station; those front USB ports work great with classic USB controllers!
First off, it really depends on whether you have the 3rd gen i5 or i7 model, as that will influence your upgrade options. These were solid for office use about 14 years ago, but they might struggle with modern games. If you can, check the specs—maybe open it up if you’re comfortable doing so!
I’d love to check it out, but I’m not sure where to find the specs without my HDMI adapter.

Cool, I’ll look for the service tag now. Thanks for the tip!
