What should I do after spilling water in my laptop?

I accidentally spilled water into my laptop through the back vents. I quickly turned it off, but before it powered down completely, I saw a black screen warning that the device encountered some problems, and then it shut off. I've disconnected everything and turned it upside down to let it dry, placing a fan near the bottom vents. Is my laptop ruined, or is there hope?

If your fans got hit by the water, that could definitely be problematic. But you might still have a chance. Try letting it dry thoroughly and then give it a shot.

The warning message you saw is a good sign. If the laptop was truly fried, it probably wouldn't have even given you that message. Just ensure it dries out completely, and check for any visible damage inside, like scorch marks. If you're feeling up to it, cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol can help remove mineral residue, but that’s more of a last resort.

I appreciate the advice! It's a bummer; my sister spilled her drink on it.

It's likely not completely toast, but it's hard to say for sure. Let it dry out completely before trying to power it on. I've fixed similar issues before where corrosion was present, but sometimes all it takes is a new battery if that’s the problem. Just keep an eye on it after you dry it out.

What if it wasn't near the battery? Does that still matter?
