I currently have a setup with a 7800x3d and a 5080. I'm wondering if I should upgrade to either a 4090 or a 5090. Do you think the performance improvement will justify the cost of upgrading?

Honestly, I find it really hard to justify that upgrade. It seems to me more about showing off or fearing you're missing out rather than actual necessity.
I wouldn’t think upgrading to a 4090 is necessary in your position. If you can justify the price, a 5090 might be a decent choice. But really, going from a 5080 doesn’t seem sensible, especially with how crazy component prices are right now.
The 4090 offers around a 15% performance boost, but you'll be missing out on some features like multi-frame generation. The 5090, however, is said to be about 50% faster. It really comes down to whether you feel that's worth the investment for your gaming needs.
Ultimately, the decision is yours. After selling your 5080, you might still need to spend another $2000 or more, with today's prices. So ask yourself if that expense is really worth it.
Definitely not a good time for an upgrade given the current pricing. You probably should have considered this a while ago when the 5090 was at MSRP - that would have made more sense. Right now, it feels like a bad financial move.
