Can AI Reproduce Itself?

I recently had a conversation where someone asked me if AI can reproduce itself. Initially, I thought it was a simple 'YES', but then I started questioning that answer. How would you explain this concept of AI reproduction to your friends? What do you think it really means for AI to reproduce?

It's possible for AI to create a new version of itself, but again, that's not true reproduction. Think of it like this: if two AIs collaborate and combine their training data, they can end up developing a new AI model, but it's all still driven by human design and support.

In the future, it might get closer to being able to do this independently. With advancements in technology, we could see scenarios where AI can self-generate and evolve, but right now, we're not quite there yet.

I think most people would say no. AI can make copies of itself in a way, but it's not like it can generate a brand new AI entirely by itself without human intervention. It's still reliant on humans providing the resources and environment.

The whole idea of AI reproducing is a bit tricky. If you ask me, it depends on how you define 'reproduce'. Sure, an AI can create a new model based on its parameters, but can it do all the steps involved without any help? Not really. In a way, it can mimic reproduction, but it doesn't have the instinct or drive to do so like living beings do.

I believe that while AI can technically copy its code and create variations based on it, that's more like cloning than reproduction. Real reproduction involves a lot more factors and complexities than just duplicating a codebase.
