Should I Upgrade My PC or Go for a New Build?

I'm currently using an Intel i7-7700k, MSI z270 motherboard, GTX 3060 GPU, and 32GB of RAM. I'm feeling overwhelmed and unsure about the best course of action. I want to play all the latest games smoothly, but I'm experiencing performance issues like FPS drops and stuttering. Is it possible to upgrade any components easily, or should I just consider rebuilding my entire setup or even buying a prebuilt system? Any advice would be appreciated!

You could swap out the motherboard and CPU since there’s no upgrade path with your current setup. The Z270 board won't support the 8000 or 9000 series Intel chips, so you'll need to go for a complete overhaul if you want something more powerful. Besides, there aren't any significant upgrades available for your current setup.

If you're on a tight budget, I'd suggest upgrading your GPU, especially if you're not planning to invest heavily right now. However, if you can spend a little more, consider both a new GPU and CPU. Something like the 5800X3D would be a great fit, even though it limits you to the AM4 platform. Just make sure to plan for a future upgrade path!

Yeah, the 5800X3D sounds solid! But if I go that route, what's a good motherboard that will last a couple of years? I want something reliable that won't limit my next upgrades.

You might want to look at B550 or X570 boards for the AM4. They offer good support and compatibility for future CPUs.

Honestly, I think a rebuild is the best option here. The Z270 platform has hit its limits, so upgrading just parts isn’t really practical. It's better to start fresh with newer hardware.

If you're trying to save some cash, you could keep your RAM and maybe your GPU. Bumping up to a newer CPU and motherboard combo will help you a lot. I recently jumped up to 11th gen hardware while keeping my 3060ti, and the performance boost has been noticeable!

With what you have, your best options are to either stick to AM4 with a B550 board and something like the Ryzen 5800x, or move to LGA1700 with good boards like the B760. The LGA1700 setup gives you a solid upgrade path with future CPU generations, which is a huge plus!

Considering today's market, rebuilding might be the way to go. You should definitely keep your RAM and GPU if they’re still solid. For a new build, aim for a decent CPU that can handle a stronger GPU later. If you choose AM4, a 5700x will work, but the 5800x3D is even better if you can find it at a reasonable price. For LGA1700, something like the i5-12600KF would be great, especially with DDR4 support for cost-saving.
