Why Does Premium Tech Feel Like a Downgrade?

I've recently been experiencing some frustrating limitations with my premium tech. I own an M3 MacBook featuring a 16-inch Liquid Retina display and I subscribe to the 4K tiers on Netflix and Prime. However, when I'm traveling or anywhere without super-fast internet, I'm stuck watching shows in poor 480p quality because browsers don't allow downloads. It's baffling that there's no native app for Mac or PC that lets you save shows in 4K. I have plenty of storage available, but I end up watching movies like it's the early 2000s on a subpar airplane screen since I don't own the files I'm paying for. I even tried screen recording to save something for the flight, but ended up with just a black screen. Is there a technical reason behind this lack of high-resolution offline viewing on laptops, or is it just corporate greed?

It's all about DRM, man. They build it into everything so you can't truly own what you pay for. The black screen you saw while trying to record is just part of the system designed to prevent copies. Macs don’t get download options because streaming services are paranoid about it, I guess. Phones can download just fine, but laptops are left out. That's why people suggest tools like Keepr or TubeDigger to grab stuff offline. It's a shame premium services still leave you with such poor quality while traveling.

Yeah, and it makes no sense since laptops are often what people travel with! And don’t forget, Netflix does allow phone downloads for offline viewing, which is a lifesaver for flights.

Isn't it funny how phones can download but laptops can't? Same company, same account, yet different rules.

Because you don’t own anything anymore. It's all just rented access.

It likely comes down to the risk of piracy. If they let you download a file on a PC, someone could easily convert it to an MP4 and redistribute it. They’ve already implemented DRM to block screen recording. Honestly, the best way to protest this is to cancel your subscription and 'sail the high seas' instead. 📅🏴‍☠️

Totally, it's frustrating when you invest in a subscription but can’t access the content as you want.
