Did My PC Components Get Damaged from My PSU Overheating?

I recently bought a TUF Gaming 5090 graphics card and connected it to an 850W MSI Gold PSU. After a few days of running some intense tasks, I noticed a smell similar to heated plastic coming from the PSU. I immediately shut everything down and unplugged the system. My main concern now is whether my components might have been damaged from this issue, and how I can check for any damage since I've got a new 1500W PSU on the way.

Just a heads up, the 850W PSU is undersized for your setup. Once you swap in the new PSU and replace all the power cables, you shouldn’t have to worry too much.

Check the power connector to the GPU; melting is a common issue with these connectors. Also, did you use an adapter or a native cable for your setup?

You generally find out if something's damaged when you try to use it, but be cautious! If there was a burning smell, using it could cause even more damage. First, inspect the connectors for any physical damage before testing.

Check all the connectors on your components and cables, especially the 12V cable going to your GPU. Look for any signs of burning or charring.

Make sure the GPU power connector is fully inserted and hasn't melted. If your PSU is new, a little smell under load is normal for a short period, but an 850W PSU is definitely underpowered for a 5090. If the smell was only from the PSU, you should be okay.
