Why Does ChatGPT Still Remember My Past Conversations After Deleting Everything?

I recently deleted all my memories and previous chats in ChatGPT, but when I ask it about me, it provides a detailed summary of past interactions. It even references images I've made, which aren't visible in my library. Despite trying various methods (except for deleting my profile), it seems like the only way to truly start fresh is to create a new account. I'm wondering if this is a potential bug related to the ongoing memory features they've been working on, as it feels like a significant privacy concern. If it takes a while to erase past data, it should be mentioned when deleting chats. I've noticed that with the 'Reference Chat History' setting on, it still recalls deleted chats, which doesn't sit well with me. Has this happened to anyone else? What are my options for truly starting over?

It sounds like there might be a delay in fully deleting your data from their servers. I've heard it's more like 30 days before everything is truly wiped out. Maybe it's still in a caching system, so you might just need to wait and see if it clears up after that period. If you're keen to start new interactions without the baggage, creating a new profile could be the cleanest option right now.

Honestly, I think if you're sharing personal info, it's better to limit what you tell it. I also find it kind of amusing that it keeps reciting back things I thought I had deleted! It's like a memory that just won't go away. At least we should be careful about what we expose it to.

I get you! The inconsistency in how it handles deleted chats is frustrating. I feel safer knowing that not all my details are accessible, but it's unsettling how it seems to maintain some data you thought was gone. Just make sure to utilize privacy options as much as you can.

I feel you! It's concerning that it references deleted information. If you turn off the 'Reference Chat History' option, it should help. But if you want it to reference some things while deleting old memories, that's a tricky balance. A new profile might be the easiest way to start from scratch.

It's definitely a bug or something that needs fixing! I have a similar concern. Even when you delete chats, those internal 'memories' seem to linger. I've found that you can ask to clear memories, but I still think they need to be more transparent about how long things are actually stored after deletion. Keep pestering support about it.
