I'm looking to upgrade from my Ryzen 5 5600X and I'm torn between getting the Ryzen 9 3900X or the Ryzen 7 5800X. I use my PC for both work and gaming; my tasks include programming, video editing, 3D design, and gaming. The 3900X is only $30 more expensive, but I'm not sure which one would be better for my needs.

Consider how much you rely on professional tasks like 3D design. If you can manage with slightly longer render times, the 5800X is a good pick. It balances well for both gaming and productivity without straying too far from your current setup.

I'd recommend going with the 5800X if gaming is a priority. It has much better single-core performance, which is crucial for most games. Plus, for general tasks, it won't lag behind the 3900X too much either.

If your main focus is video editing and 3D design, consider the 3900X for its extra cores. It really shines in multi-threaded scenarios. However, keep in mind that the 5800X offers a better AVX2 implementation and can still handle multi-core tasks reasonably well.

That's true, but for general productivity, the 5800X might still keep up pretty well, especially if you're not fully utilizing all cores most of the time.

Honestly, it depends on your current workflow. If you're happy with the 5600X and it's not holding you back, you might not need a significant upgrade at all. But if you're adamant about upgrading, the 5800X is a solid choice without sacrificing too much gaming performance.
