I've been trying to use Linux on my old laptop with an NVIDIA GT 740M GPU, thinking it's great for older hardware. However, it seems that most popular Linux distros require a GTX 16XX series or newer to install NVIDIA drivers. I'm baffled because Windows 11 runs fine on it, but Linux doesn't seem to support my GPU properly. I can use the open-source Nouveau driver, but I'm worried about performance issues with it. Am I missing something, or is there a way to get the official NVIDIA driver working?

There are some distros that actually support legacy drivers, which should work with your GT 740M. It's worth checking whether you can find those options, even if the popular ones like Linux Mint don't offer good support for older GPUs.

Why don't the popular distros support it? Like Mint?
