Advice on Dealing with Apple After Camera Defect Discovery

I recently bought an iPhone 16, and since day one, I've noticed strange streaks in almost every photo. I initially thought it was just dirt on the lens, but after cleaning it, I discovered that the camera was showing dark lines in the viewfinder. It turns out the rear camera failed diagnostics, indicating a manufacturer defect. However, I accidentally dropped the phone before my appointment, which cracked the back glass. Now, Apple is trying to charge me $159 for a 'cosmetic' fix, even though I went there primarily because of the defective camera. They won't address the camera issue separately due to the back glass damage. I'm frustrated and don't have the money for this repair. What should I say to escalate this and possibly get a device replacement? I'm also considering going to a different Apple Store where I might have better luck or even trying to ship it in for repair instead.

It sounds like you’re in a tough spot. Unfortunately, Apple usually adheres strictly to their policies. Since you have accidental damage, they may not cover the camera issue without fixing the back glass first. I know it's frustrating, especially when you feel the camera defect wasn’t your fault, but it might be quicker—albeit more expensive—to just pay for the back glass repair and then deal with the camera issue afterward. Once it's repaired, you can focus on getting the camera sorted out without the warranty complications hanging over your head.

Honestly, it seems like your best bet is to approach Apple and explain your situation calmly. Emphasize that you tested the camera before the drop, and that you believe the defect was present from the start. But remember, since the back glass is cracked, they're likely to stick to their policy of handling the physical damage first. Maybe see if they can offer a better price or even a trade-in once the damage is fixed. It's a hassle, but sometimes that's how they operate.

Look, I get that it’s super annoying. But you should know that Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover damages caused by drops or accidents. So even if they acknowledge the camera defect, you might still have to cover repairs for the back glass. Just be prepare to pay that fee, and then at least you can start fresh with an actual working camera.
