Should I Use My Old Optane Drive in My New Build?

Unless you frequently transfer large files, I don't think the Optane is worth it anymore. It's built for an older kind of performance. But, if you have room to spare in your new build, having it around could be useful for specific tasks. It still has some value for those who do low-depth operations where it excels.

I wouldn't bother. Optane is getting old, and when you compare it to modern drives, it's just not as fast. I just upgraded from 2TB Gen 4 RAID drives to a 2TB Gen 5 NVMe, and the speed literally makes the Optane feel like it's from another era. If you really need that slot for something else, just sell the Optane and move on.

Honestly, it depends on what you're planning to do. The Optane excels as a scratch drive for tasks like video editing and really shines when handling lots of small files. It outperforms the newer SSDs in those scenarios. For gaming, you might not see much of a difference, but it can help reduce pop-in issues in certain games. Boot times are snappier too, especially when compared to standard SSDs. So, if you have the space and need the performance boost in specific areas, it could be worth it.

Keep in mind that Optane isn't really supported on modern platforms like AM5 or even LGA1700. Plus, the speeds you're looking at with Optane just don't compare to the newer NVMe drives. The T710 is blowing it out of the water with speeds over 14,000 MB/s, so you might want to reconsider.

I think there’s a video out there that discusses this! But honestly, I suspect it could just slow you down compared to newer tech. Optane was great, but newer NVMe drives have taken the lead.
