I'm having trouble with my Xbox controller connecting to my PC via Bluetooth. It has significant input lag, frequently disconnects, and often doesn't respond at all. However, when I connect it with a cable, everything works perfectly. I'm looking for suggestions on how to fix the wireless issue so I can use the controller without being tethered.

I tried that too; the input lag and disconnection still happen even on another PC. So it seems like your Bluetooth might be the culprit regardless of the machine.
It might be worth testing your controller with another computer. If you know someone with a PC, give it a shot to see if the same issues pop up there. Sometimes the problem can be with your Bluetooth adapter. If that's the case, consider getting an affordable Bluetooth 5.3 USB adapter; they can really help with connection issues.
