Why won’t my Mac recognize a blank CD in my external drive?

I'm having trouble with my external CD drive. It works perfectly fine with CDs that already have data on them, but when I try to use a blank CD, my Mac says there's no drive detected. I'm hoping to burn CDs, but this issue is preventing me from doing that. Has anyone encountered this before?

First off, is your CD drive actually a burner? Some older Mac models only had read-only drives. If it’s just that, then it won't work with blank CDs. Double-check your drive's specifications to see if it can burn CDs.

You might want to check the System Information on your Mac. Go to the ATA and SATA sections—see if your optical drive pops up there and note its brand. This can help you understand what's going on with the recognition of the blank CDs.

I hear you! Make sure to check your drive model. You mentioned it’s a Targus ADV01US, which should burn CDs, at least it used to! Try using that Verbatim drive too, even though it’s blinking—could be a sign it's not functioning right.

Honestly, who even burns CDs these days? But if you need to, I feel your pain! It’s frustrating when things don’t work. Have you tried different brands of blank CDs? Sometimes compatibility can be a problem.
