Why is Linux so complicated for new users?

I'm considering switching to Linux since I have some experience, but I'm hesitant because I don't want to spend hours in the terminal fixing issues. I've tried a few distros, and my experiences have been frustrating. For instance, I attempted to set up a multi-monitor configuration with scaling adjustments, but Linux Mint black screens whenever I try to change the scaling. I learned that Cinnamon (the desktop environment for Mint) doesn't support scaling for single monitors, so I switched to Kubuntu, thinking that would help. However, I faced further issues, such as not being able to interact with Firefox after installation. I tried to resolve this with terminal commands, but it feels overwhelming for a fresh install. I even recently tried Fedora, but it has the same problem with Firefox. My hardware should be compatible: Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, RTX 5080 GPU, and 64GB RAM on a 1TB SSD. I just want a smooth, hassle-free experience like I have on Windows. Is it unreasonable to expect Linux to work out of the box?

You have to remember that Linux has a smaller market share than Windows and macOS, which means it often lacks the same level of support and development. Expecting everything to work just as seamlessly is a lot to ask. But if you're willing to invest time, there are user-friendly distros like Bazzite or Nobara that might meet your expectations better.

The problems with multi-monitor setups often arise from using X11, which has scaling limitations. If you're looking for a better user experience, you might want to check out distros like Zorin OS or Ultramarine Linux that support Wayland and have smoother scaling options. Ubuntu-based distros like Mint can be limiting for modern hardware, especially if you're looking for a hassle-free setup.

Instead of scaling your monitor, have you tried just increasing the font size? That can make everything more readable without having to mess with monitor settings.

It's important to consider your hardware—sometimes Linux can have issues with new components. For instance, the problems you're experiencing with Firefox in Kubuntu are often due to it being installed as a Snap package, which can be glitchy. Installing Firefox via Flatpak or directly from Mozilla's repository might resolve the issues for you.

Have you considered moving to a more modern distro like Fedora with KDE? From my experience, it's a lot more stable and user-friendly. The issues you encountered with Mint stem from its age—newer distros have a better track record for compatibility, especially with gaming and productivity software.
