Do I need to update my iPhone 13 Pro Max before a battery replacement?

Hey everyone, I'm in Canada and my iPhone 13 Pro Max's battery health is down to 78%, which is really affecting its performance. I want to know if I need to update my software from iOS 18 to 26 before I can get my battery replaced at Apple. I've heard some users experienced issues, like a green screen, after updating. Also, what's the likelihood of my data needing to be erased during the battery replacement process? I was advised to back up my data at the store in case anything happens. I created this account just to ask this!

I recently got my iPhone 13 Pro Max battery replaced in the U.S. and it went smoothly. I updated to version 26 with no issues. They backed up my data through iCloud in-store, and I turned off 'Find My iPhone' before handing it over. Got my phone back in about 90 minutes, everything was fine.

Honestly, you shouldn’t worry about the update breaking anything. You can safely update before the battery replacement. It’s always a good idea to back up your data because, while data loss isn’t common, it can happen just in case something goes wrong during the repair.

If you're feeling anxious about the update affecting your battery, just know that the update is not a strict requirement for getting a new battery, but it’s recommended for other improvements. I understand the fear about your data, but it’s good you’re backing it up. Best of luck with your appointment!
