I haven't gamed in almost a decade, but I'm starting to get back into it casually. I'm looking at playing games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch, which ran fine on my setup before, but I'm not sure how much things have changed in terms of game engines and requirements. I might also play some older titles since they're more budget-friendly. Can my current build handle these games? If not, what should I upgrade? Here are my specs:
- 3072MB Sapphire Radeon R9 280X
- be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1 Cooler
- 120GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD
- 650 Watt EVGA SuperNOVA PSU
- Intel Core i5 4670K
- ASRock Z97 Pro4 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 RAM
Besides changing the thermal paste, is there anything else I need to consider? Also, once I graduate, will I be able to upgrade parts over time, or is a full build replacement necessary? Thanks for any help!

You might want to hold off on upgrades for now. The tech market is pretty wild right now with GPU prices skyrocketing. Waiting until 2027 could be a good idea when hopefully the prices stabilize, and newer components will be available that could perform better without breaking the bank.
Your system should handle WoW and Overwatch decently, but don't sink too much cash into it. Adding more RAM would help—16GB is pretty standard now, and that’s not too pricey for DDR3. If you're looking to upgrade the graphics, something like a GTX 1660 Ti or an RTX 2060 Super could be a solid choice for your CPU.
Honestly, your current setup is pretty outdated. It's best to consider a whole new build. I'd recommend starting fresh with something like an Intel i5-14600K, paired with a GPU like the RX 6600 XT. You'll get way better performance for your money, and it’s more future-proof. It's a great time to upgrade if you're looking for a budget-friendly option, especially with the new tech coming out soon.
