What should I focus on before applying for a DevOps job?

I've been working as a systems admin for over ten years, and for the last two, I've been diving into GitOps using Ansible and Terraform, managing Kubernetes clusters on-premises. I have some experience with Azure but wouldn't call myself an expert. I've also written a few CI/CD pipelines. I'm looking to transition into a DevOps role but am unsure what additional skills or certifications I might need to bolster my application.

Thinking about getting some certifications is a good idea, but honestly, why not start applying right now? The programming skills you have will certainly help. From my experience, the balance between Dev and Ops varies by company, but most often, DevOps roles feel like sysadmin jobs that pay a bit more. So go for it!

That's a fair point! I just switched jobs eight months ago, and it turned out nothing like I expected. I’m hesitant to apply just yet, though, because I’m worried they'll expect me to have some software engineering level experience.
