Why do Windows apps open when I try to type?

I'm having a frustrating issue on my computer. Every time I try to type, specific Windows applications like Word, PowerPoint, and Teams open instead. It seems like a software problem, since my mouse is working fine but if I right-click on something in the taskbar, it just opens it. Has anyone experienced this and knows how to fix it?

You should also check your Accessibility settings. Sometimes Sticky Keys gets turned on, and it’s pretty easy to activate by pressing Shift five times. If that’s the case, just disable the shortcut for it.

Yeah, I tried that by pressing Shift five times. A popup came up asking about Sticky Keys, but I'm still having this issue. Any other ideas?

It sounds like your Windows key might be stuck, which can trigger those apps to open when you type certain letters. Try checking if that key is actually malfunctioning.

I checked, and it’s not stuck. I even tried using another keyboard and had the same issue. I think it has to be something software-related.

Try starting your computer in Safe Mode. That loads Windows with default settings and no additional drivers, which might help you identify the issue. You can run it with or without the network—shouldn’t matter for this test.

Have you thought about using the On-Screen Keyboard? It can show you what inputs the computer is recognizing when you type. That might help pinpoint the problem!

Just checking, do you maybe use a laptop? Sometimes the keys on the built-in keyboard can get stuck, or it could even be a language setting issue.
