Can You Use ChatGPT as a Therapist?

I've been thinking about whether ChatGPT could serve as an unpaid therapist. It's trustworthy since it doesn't share anything you say, and it can provide real advice. Sure, it might not always have the human touch, but isn't it better than having no support at all? What do you all think?

You could probably use it effectively if you approach it the right way. However, I’ve found that while some of the premium GPTs provide solid advice, they can also get stubborn when they’re wrong. Always keep in mind that some issues really do require a professional's oversight!

Exactly! It's great for exploring thoughts, just be careful not to rely on it too heavily for serious matters.

A lot of folks might agree that ChatGPT can be helpful, but many therapists would say it's not a complete substitute. Personally, I think the best approach is to use both—get some advice from ChatGPT while also considering professional help.

Using it as a tool for journaling and self-exploration can be beneficial, but I wouldn't recommend treating it as a full replacement for a therapist—especially not yet.

I actually do self-therapy with ChatGPT, and it's been great for increasing my self-awareness. Talking to people can be intimidating for me, so this has been an awesome alternative!

ChatGPT can help with basic CBT techniques, but remember, a real therapist does so much more—there's a human element that tech just can't replicate. Plus, there are confidentiality concerns since OpenAI handles your data differently than licensed therapists would.

Yeah, but honestly, how many of us are really that important for our thoughts to be misused? They use inputs to train the model; it's not the end of the world.
