Is it outdated to allocate VM RAM in 1024MB increments?

I've always allocated RAM for virtual machines in 1024MB chunks, but my coworkers at my new job set it to values like 4000MB without any issues. It really bothers me, but I'm curious—does this approach still matter today?

Yeah, it gets a bit wild when you see someone trying to assign things like 3 vCPUs. I used to manage a VMware environment where every VM was treated like it was physical, and we faced a ton of scheduling issues because of it. Sometimes you just have to go with what works based on the workload!

I totally get what you mean! My OCD also craves RAM to be set in 1024 increments. Plus, it just makes graphs look nicer, doesn’t it?

Honestly, most modern systems don’t care much about the increments as long as you're not doing anything that specifically requires it. As for power of 2, that optimization is more about aesthetics—graphs showing 1GB instead of 0.95GB are way easier to read!

I’m with you! Always stick to 1024MB for RAM. For CPU cores, I go for multiples of 2 as well.
