I have a Windows 11 laptop that's set up as part of my small company's domain, but I'd also like to use it for personal tasks. What's the best and safest way to manage this? I know I can log in with a local account to keep some separation, but I'm curious if that might lead to issues. Would it be better to dual boot with Linux?

Joining a personal laptop to a company domain isn’t standard practice and can complicate things. If you're looking for separation, creating a separate Windows profile could help. Dual booting with Linux might be your best bet for keeping your work and personal usage distinct.

I believe that business devices should strictly be for work. Check if your company has an acceptable usage policy—ours outlines these situations clearly. If you go the local account route, be aware that you have limited recovery options. If the laptop malfunctions, you could lose any personal data that isn’t backed up.

Using your work laptop for personal tasks can be risky. It’s usually not a good idea to mix work and personal environments. If your company doesn’t provide you with a separate device, you might consider investing in a low-cost used laptop specifically for work. Your employer should provide the right tools for you, so if they say a cheaper laptop isn’t enough, that's on them.
