Is My CPU Bottlenecking My Gaming PC?

I'm not super technical, but I have a hunch that my CPU might be the bottleneck in my gaming setup. Here are my specs:

1. GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (12GB)
2. RAM: 48GB
3. Processor: Intel Core i5-8600K @ 3.60 GHz, 6 cores
4. Motherboard: ASUSTeK PRIME Z370-A

When gaming, my CPU usage hits 100% while my GPU barely reaches 10%. Even by cranking down graphics settings in demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077, my FPS barely improves. Can anyone confirm if it's indeed a CPU issue and share some ideas on upgrades or tweaks I could make? Thanks!

For sure, it's definitely your CPU. If you haven't already, try gaming at a higher resolution like 1440p to see if it helps balance out the load a bit. But honestly, an upgrade is the way to go to relieve that bottleneck. Also, check if your CPU is boosting properly; sometimes it can get stuck at base clock speeds.

Absolutely, your CPU is the weak link here. Modern games, especially CPU-heavy ones like Cyberpunk, require more cores and higher performance than the 8600K can provide. Upgrading to a newer CPU would definitely help, especially with your RAM and GPU being perfectly fine. If you want a smoother experience, it might be time for a new CPU and motherboard.

Yes, it's mainly the CPU holding you back. Modern titles are extremely demanding and your 6-core chip can get saturated easily. Don’t forget to also verify your RAM setup, it might be worth removing that extra stick to maintain dual-channel for better performance.

Yeah, it sounds like your CPU is bottlenecking your system for sure. The i5-8600K just doesn't cut it anymore, especially with an RTX 4070. When your CPU is maxed out at 100% but your GPU is hardly being used, it usually means your GPU is waiting for the CPU to keep up. If you're looking to get the most out of your 4070, consider upgrading your CPU and motherboard. Something more modern will really boost your gaming experience!
