Should I buy a DDR4 RAM kit or use my extra 8GB stick?

I have a Ryzen 5 5600X CPU and an RX 6600 GPU with 16GB of 3200MHz RAM. I also own an 8GB stick of 2666MHz RAM sitting unused in my server that I no longer need. Video editing has been lagging lately, and I feel like I could use more RAM. A new 16GB kit costs about 150 EUR, which is too steep for used RAM. Should I just install the 2666MHz stick, knowing it will slow my other sticks down to that speed, or should I invest in a new kit?

You already have the 2666MHz stick, so why not try it out and see how it performs? Sometimes testing it yourself can give you a clear picture of the difference it makes for your needs.

If you're thinking of using three sticks, I'd suggest choosing between two sticks or going for a fourth. Using three sticks can cause issues down the line. Try to stick with either a dual-channel setup or get a complete set instead. Plus, you could run into some performance hits because of the mixed speeds.

It's better to have slower RAM than to be short on memory, especially for video editing. The extra capacity could really help with performance.
