Should I Upgrade My Gaming Setup for 1440p Gaming?

I've been using my current gaming rig with a DDR4 16GB RAM, a 3060 Ti GPU, and an i5-12400F CPU (2.50 GHz) for over four years. Lately, I've been getting back into PC building and found some exciting new options like the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the 9700 XT OC GPU. However, finding them at MSRP is quite a challenge in Canada. I'm hoping for some honest advice on whether my setup needs an upgrade to handle 1440p gaming. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Your current rig should manage 1440p at medium to high settings with around 60 FPS, which isn't too bad. Prices for DDR5 are really high right now, so I’d suggest maybe just upgrading your GPU for now since AMD cards are decently priced at the moment.

Would my i5-12400K bottleneck the RX 9070XT if I switched?

Honestly, only you can decide if an upgrade is necessary. If you have the budget and you're not satisfied with your gaming experience, then go for it! But if you're happy with your current setup, maybe hold off.

Agreed! It's all about your satisfaction level with performance.

Have you checked if you're maxing out any resources while gaming? Monitoring could help you spot bottleneck issues—the first step before making upgrade decisions.

Great tip, I never considered that! Thanks!

I upgraded my setup recently, and I definitely feel the improvement in performance. It’s worth considering! Did you stick with DDR4 RAM or switch to DDR5?

If consistent performance at 1440p is your goal, I’d say an upgrade would be beneficial. Look for a RTX 5070 or RX 9070 to drop into your current system. But if that’s too pricey, a new 1440p monitor could also enhance your experience without blowing the budget.

If I have a CPU and AM4 motherboard, would upgrading the GPU and PSU be worth it?
