I was trying to tidy up my desktop and ended up corrupting my icons. Most of them now just show up as black squares. I've already attempted to clear the icon cache without any success. The only temporary fix seems to involve using the disk cleanup tool to clear thumbnails and then restarting my computer, but the icons turn black again after the next reboot. Is there any way to permanently resolve this issue?

Have you tried logging in with a different user account? It could help determine if the problem is user-specific. Also, consider using system restore if you have a point saved from before the issue started.
Sometimes, this can happen due to Windows Explorer running into issues. Try restarting it from the Task Manager and see if that resolves the problem. If it keeps happening, doing a system file check through the command prompt might help fix it.
What exactly did you do to change your desktop? Did you use any special commands or programs, or maybe delete something by accident? I’m just trying to figure out if those actions could be causing this issue.
