Will a LAN Expansion Card Solve My Upload Speed Issues?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about getting a LAN expansion card because I'm having some serious issues with my motherboard's LAN port – my upload speeds are really low. I'm looking at this TP-Link adapter, which seems decent. However, I recently bought a SATA expansion card that got great reviews, but it caused some problems for me. The drive would show up, but then it would disappear and make my Windows Explorer freeze. I'm not sure if it was the card, the port, or the drive itself causing the issues.

I've noticed something odd about my motherboard, the ASUS ROG STRIX B850-A GAMING WIFI R2: the third NVMe port shares bandwidth with the only non-GPU PCIe port. Given that, I'm curious – will this LAN expansion card work in that port at least at speeds of 1GB/s when there's no drive installed? And by the way, is it common for the NVMe port to not show any drive when something is plugged into it?

It sounds like you’re having a frustrating experience! Just a heads up, when measuring speeds, make sure to look at the difference between Gb and GB. They’re not the same, so if your internet is 1Gb/s, that’s equivalent to about 125MB/s in real data transfer speeds due to the conversion. Since your onboard NIC is 2.5GbE and the TP-Link card is also 2.5GbE, you probably won’t see a significant improvement in upload speeds. What software are you using to test your speeds? Sometimes that can affect how things are reported.

I have the same motherboard, and my onboard 2.5GbE performs great – I can sustain about 280MB/s to my home server, so I'm not sure why you're having so much trouble. What kind of upload speeds are you actually seeing? If you’re only getting 60 up, it might be more than just the port. Make sure you’re checking all the right settings and software!
