Do I Need to Upgrade My Motherboard for a CPU Upgrade?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 8700F on an MSI B840 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard. I primarily use my PC for gaming, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 7800X3D while pairing it with my RTX 5070. My question is whether I really need to upgrade my motherboard to get good performance out of the 7800X3D, or is this just exaggerated talk?

No need to worry about upgrading your motherboard just for the 7800X3D. Since you already have the B840, just go ahead and enjoy the performance boost from the new CPU!

The 8700F isn't the best for gaming, actually. The 7800X3D should give you a solid upgrade—around 15-30% better performance from what I've read.

Honestly, if you were starting from scratch, I’d suggest a different motherboard, but since you already have the B840, just stick with it for now and enjoy your upgrade.

Got mine pre-built for $1400 in December, and looking at prices now, I think I got a good deal!

If you're tight on budget, just go for the 7800X3D. No need to rush into a motherboard upgrade unless you're really looking for more features later on.

I plan to sell my old PC and use that money for the 7800X3D. I'd prefer to avoid a motherboard upgrade unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Performance gain varies by game. Keep an eye on your GPU usage; if it's under 95%, then upgrading to the 7800X3D will help your gaming experience!

Thanks for the tip!

You might not see a massive boost with a 5070 at 1440p or higher, but if you play CPU-intensive games, it could be worth it!

My plan is to sell my old setup for cash to upgrade to the 7800X3D first, and I’ll tackle the GPU and motherboard later.
