Is Switching to Linux Worth It for Gaming?

I've been hearing a lot of great things about Linux, especially regarding the issues with frequent Windows updates and privacy concerns. I'm curious about making the switch, but I'm worried about whether the games I play on Steam, especially those that are modded through platforms like Curse Forge and Thunderstore, will work. More specifically, can I play games available through the Xbox app like Sea of Thieves? Also, what's the deal with playing Fortnite considering its anti-cheat system? Will I run into any major issues?

Check out ProtonDB for game compatibility; it’s a great resource to see how well games run on Linux. Generally, modding can be tricky—some games, like Minecraft, work fine, but others might take more work. Xbox Store games? Yeah, those don’t really play on Linux, and Fortnite is a big no due to its anti-cheat measures.

I recently switched to Linux and most of my gaming library ran fine out of the box. Just be prepared for some hiccups, especially with online games like Destiny 2 and others that have strict anti-cheat systems. It’s fine overall, but it requires some effort to get every game working smoothly.

Before diving into Linux for gaming, ask yourself if you're ready to adapt and troubleshoot a bit. If you're cool with that, it could be a rewarding experience! Just know it's not as straightforward as Windows, and doing your homework is key.

Totally agree! If you’re not up for some learning, it might be better to stick with Windows.

I’ve been using Linux for gaming and had a mixed experience. Some games run perfectly, while others are hit or miss. If you mainly play single-player games, you might be alright, but for multiplayer with kernel-level anti-cheat, you’re likely to face issues. It’s definitely worth it if you enjoy tinkering and learning, though!

Exactly! If you're okay with a bit of customization, you'll probably enjoy the process.

Xbox cloud gaming works well on Linux if you use Edge. Most Steam games also function fine, but modding can be a hassle due to extra steps. If mods are what you enjoy, just know you might have to invest time into figuring things out per game.
