Is Upgrading from i7-12700 to i9-13900 Worth It for Gaming?

Hey folks! I'm currently running an i7-12700 along with an RTX 3080Ti and playing games at 1440p, usually with high graphics settings and enabling ray tracing if I still hit at least 70 fps. However, I'm not content with the performance and am considering upgrading my CPU to an i9-13900 (without the K version). I feel it's not worth upgrading the graphics card right now since the prices are high, and I believe a GPU upgrade should provide a significant performance boost, ideally 50-100%. So I'm curious, would it actually make sense to upgrade just the CPU? What kind of real-world performance gains can I expect, and will it cause any bottleneck with my GPU? For context, I have an MSI Pro Z690-A DDR4 motherboard and a Gigabyte M27Q 170Hz monitor.

Honestly, if you're not experiencing heavy CPU bottlenecks, I wouldn’t recommend making the switch to the 13900. The performance leap won’t justify the cost unless you're planning on overclocking or doing more CPU-intensive tasks. Plus, you're likely looking at a hefty power draw and needing an upgraded cooling solution if you do upgrade.

Right? The thermal management is a nightmare with those chips!

Very true, and at that point, you really would want to consider a powerful PSU to handle it.

Honestly, upgrading to the i9-13900 from the i7-12700 isn't going to provide a significant boost in performance—maybe around 15% at best, depending on the game you're playing. With the RTX 3080Ti, you're more likely to be hitting performance limits with the GPU rather than the CPU, so it's better to hold off on the CPU upgrade until you're ready to also upgrade your GPU.

Exactly, unless you find the CPU at a really cheap price, it's just not worth it right now.

Yeah, you might as well stick with what you have for now and look into a GPU upgrade when you're ready.

It's not the right time to upgrade your CPU. If you're looking for a real upgrade, consider getting a better GPU instead. The 3080Ti is still a strong card, and most games will be GPU-bound with that setup.

FutureProof -

Totally agree! Your setup is decent, and upgrading the GPU will give you a more noticeable performance improvement.

I wouldn't even bother with CPU upgrades unless you're really beginning to feel bottlenecked; stick with the current setup.

If your GPU is performing close to its limits, upgrading the CPU might not yield any noticeable improvements. Plus, if you consider switching to an AMD setup, you could get a much better performance boost overall, but that would mean a whole system overhaul. All in all, stick to upgrading the GPU or even consider going for a different platform if you want to upgrade significantly.

Yeah, the AMD Ryzen series can give amazing performance gains, especially in gaming.

For sure! It might be more costly right now, but if you go all in with DDR5 and a new motherboard, it'll definitely be worth it.
