Why Does My Monitor Turn Off When My TV Does?

I've got a 1440p monitor paired with a 4k TV, both running on Windows 11. The issue I'm experiencing is that whenever my TV is turned off, my primary monitor also shuts off, even if I'm watching something on it. This issue started about a year ago, and I just upgraded to a 9070xt GPU, so I don't think it's related to that. I've scoured the settings but can't find anything that explains why this is happening. I'm really stuck on how to troubleshoot this problem!

It sounds like your TV might be affecting the signal to the monitor. Check if the HDMI port on your TV is one with CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) features enabled, which might be causing the monitor to turn off automatically. Since your monitor is set as the primary display, it shouldn’t typically react this way. Sometimes, if devices are chained or connected through certain types of HDMI ports, they can influence each other’s status. Just to clarify, are both the TV and monitor connected directly to your PC or do you have them daisy-chained?

On my Sony TV, the HDMI 4 port is commonly used for PCs. It's a good option, but just making sure both devices are directly hooked to the PC might help.

If you're still stuck, you might want to look into a workaround, like using a DP or HDMI to RCA adapter. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it could potentially keep the monitor from shutting off when the TV is turned off. Just a heads up though, that method could drop your refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz, so weigh your options!

Yeah, I was worried about that too. I really enjoy the 120Hz refresh rate, so I’ll have to think about whether that trade-off is worth it.
