Should I Invest in a Z790 Motherboard for My Intel Build?

I'm looking to build a system around an Intel 12900KF, and I'm considering going with a DDR4 motherboard. However, Z790 motherboards are quite pricey compared to the more affordable B760 options. Given that I'm also thinking about possibly upgrading to a 14700KF or 14900KF in the future, I'm wondering if spending more on a Z790 is worth it for future-proofing, or if I should just grab a mid-range board to save some cash. Also, I just learned that B760 boards might not support overclocking, which adds to my uncertainty. Is the ASRock Z690 PG Riptide a decent choice for my current CPU?

The ASRock Z690 PG Riptide is a strong choice. It offers three M.2 slots, PCIe 5.0 support, and has a BIOS flashback feature, which is handy for future-proofing as new CPUs emerge.

If you’re aiming for an i9, the mains power delivery on Z790 can give you a bit of an edge, especially with heavier loads. Just keep in mind they’re overkill if you're only doing light tasks or gaming.

Exactly! I’ve used Z-motherboards for this reason and had zero regrets.

You should be cautious about B760 motherboards. Many don’t have the power delivery needed for an i9 without issues. If you're planning a workstation build, I'd suggest sticking with a Z-series to ensure stability with that amount of RAM.

Yeah, I’m also in a similar boat with a workstation setup and sticking with DDR4 mainly because of price concerns.

At the end of the day, whether it's Z790 or B760, make sure to choose a board with solid reviews on power delivery, especially for your CPUs. You want to avoid undervolting or throttling.

Great point! I’ve had bad experiences with budget boards before.

With K-series chips, it's definitely a good idea to opt for a Z-series board. They let you undervolt or overclock as needed, which could be crucial for performance down the line. Just check prices and availability in your local area first.

Awesome advice! I'm planning to keep an eye on reviews for options.

For most users, a Z790 isn't necessary, especially if you're just gaming. But if you plan to overclock or future-proof your setup, having quality VRMs can help, particularly for high-performance CPUs. Check out the MSI and Gigabyte B760 options, though—some can actually handle the 12900KF decently as long as you avoid the really budget ones!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m leaning towards the MSI B760 GAMING PLUS. It seems like a solid choice.

Just a heads-up, the Gigabyte B760M has decent specs but might struggle under load with high-end CPUs.
