I'm experiencing a problem with the automated nightly snapshots of my 170GB MSSQL database on RDS. It takes about 2 hours to complete, and I'm using a db.t3.xlarge instance with 4 vCPUs, 3000 IOPS, and 125MBps storage throughput. This database has very low transaction activity, so I find the snapshot duration concerning. Is this timing typical, or could there be something wrong with my configuration?

It sounds like you might be running into performance limitations. Check your performance stats; you could be running low on storage or CPU burst credits, which would slow things down. I recommend looking into CloudWatch metrics to identify any limits you're hitting during the snapshot process.
RDS can have its struggles with larger databases during backup operations. Keep an eye on CPU and memory usage while snapshots are taken—if those are high, switching instance types could really help. Also, have you thought about using EC2 with FSx for ONTAP storage? It might speed up backups from hours to minutes, although it's not managed like RDS.
