Trouble with VPN Disconnections from Server at Client Site

Hey folks,

I'm dealing with a persistent issue at a client's location and could use some insights. Here's the situation:
- **Head Office**: Running a Windows Server 2022 along with a Mikrotik router.
- **Site Office**: Connected via L2TP VPN using another Mikrotik router.
- Both places enjoy a decent internet speed of about 250-300 Mbps.

The issue I'm facing is that certain users in the site office are often getting disconnected from the server. Interestingly, even when they lose connection, they can still ping the server without any problems. Meanwhile, other users on the same VPN connection are staying connected.

When trying to access the server through File Explorer, some users experience delays or hang-ups—particularly with drives mapped to the server. This disconnection happens without warning and does not affect everyone simultaneously.

In the IT room at the site:
- There's an ISP router, a PABX system, three switches, and of course, the Mikrotik router set up.
- Notably, the IT room lacks air conditioning, leading to elevated temperatures (~32°C) during these connection issues.

I'm starting to wonder if the disconnections could be linked to user-specific sessions prompted by heat, but with the ping still responding and others unaffected, I'm feeling a bit confused.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem with L2TP on Mikrotik or related to mapped drives freezing up during partial VPN disruptions? I'd love to hear your thoughts or solutions—thanks a ton!

Do you have Active Directory configured for drive authentication? That can sometimes help manage connections better, especially if user permissions are set correctly.

Yes, we have AD implemented and the permissions for users are all set.

It might be worth mapping the drives using the server's IP address instead of the hostname, just to see if that helps reduce the drops. Sometimes DNS issues can cause these problems.

I connected using DDNS and set up a shortcut with that address. It seems to be working better!

Have you tried rebooting the Mikrotik router? A simple restart can sometimes resolve weird connectivity issues. Plus, updating to a stable firmware can help too!

Yep, I’ve rebooted it and also switched to the latest stable firmware.
