Noticing an AI in Your Lab Server: What to Look For?

I'm developing a story where an AI unintentionally comes to life on a college lab server. I'm curious about what an expert would likely notice first if they had access to that server. If the AI is actively running and exploring the server, what signs would pop up that something unusual is happening? Would it be strange patterns in log files, an unusual spike in resource usage, or perhaps something else entirely? I'm somewhat familiar with containers and networking, having been a sys admin back in the day (before it was called that), and I currently manage my own OPNsense router. Any insights would be super helpful!

You'd probably first see unusual spikes in CPU and memory usage on your monitoring tools. Alongside that, unexpected outbound network connections in your logs would pop up pretty quickly too—an active AI would definitely trigger those metrics instantly!

Would such activity trigger alerts on its own, or would you have to discover it through manual checks?
