Why Did ChatGPT Mistake My Cat Photos for a Text Conversation with My Ex?

I recently uploaded some pictures of my cat into ChatGPT and asked for its opinion on them. Basically, I was curious about how my ex might react since I'd already sent her those photos. To my surprise, ChatGPT responded by saying it looked like the images represented a conversation between my ex and a friend, even providing three text messages from that supposed exchange. This response really struck me, especially because the messages sounded like things I'd fear might actually be said in real life. ChatGPT claimed it was a hallucination and that its response was likely prompted by our conversation history. However, I've saved a lot of information about my ex in other chats and described her texts, but this specific chat was mostly about the cat pictures. I just can't wrap my head around how cat images could resemble text message screenshots. Is it possible that the AI pulled information from somewhere else, like another user or social media? Am I just overthinking this, or could something else be going on?

Did you upload the images directly from your phone, or did you maybe save and re-upload them from the message thread with your ex? Images can have metadata, and AI often uses that info. It’s weird but could lead to some interesting experimentation!

I uploaded them straight from my iPhone's photo library. They were actually duplicates of what I sent to my ex. I'm worried the AI might have accessed her texts somehow due to those images being on her phone now. Does that even make sense?

That sounds plausible! If you captured those images from a thread with her, it could explain the AI's response. Sometimes we don’t realize how metadata or conversation context shapes AI interactions.

It sounds like the AI basically had two options when you asked about the pictures: either say it can't analyze them or assume they relate to your previous conversation about your ex. Maybe try uploading them again and see if it can provide a real analysis instead of guessing.

That makes a lot of sense. I did ask about the cat photos soon before uploading, but it feels odd that it couldn't properly analyze them later in the chat.

Yeah, and those text messages it created seemed surreal for sure. It’s unsettling when AI seems to read between the lines like that.

You're definitely not overreacting; it’s pretty strange! It sounds like you're picking up on something unusual happening.
