Is It a Bad Idea to Build an AM4 PC Right Now?

I've been debating whether to build a PC using the AM4 platform until AM6 is released. I know AM4 has reached its end and won't support future upgrades, but is it really foolish to go this route at this point? With the recent price hikes for DDR5 and SSDs, I'm curious about the potential performance gains of AM5 chips compared to current AM4 options. Current mid-range AM5 models only show a 10-15% improvement over their AM4 counterparts based on benchmarks. Since I'm leaning toward a small form factor build, high-end processors are out of the question. What do you all think?

It really depends on what kind of gaming setup you're after. If you're aiming for 1440p or even 4K, you might be fine with AM4, as your GPU will likely be more of a bottleneck. Just keep in mind that some games may benefit from the newer architecture.

Exactly! My 7800X3D with a solid GPU plays everything I want at 1440p. If you're not after the latest AAA titles at ultra settings, AM4 might be just right.

For budget builds, AM4 is still a solid choice for most casual gaming needs!

Honestly, I don’t see why you shouldn’t go with AM4. Most users won’t need more power for a long time, and AM4 can handle everything pretty well. I'm using a 5950X and it runs all my demanding 3D modeling and gaming tasks smoothly. No need to rush for an upgrade!

I can relate! I'm still running my old 1800 CPU, and it handles everything I throw at it just fine, even after years. I think the worry about obsolescence is overrated; if it works for you, that’s what matters.

Totally agree! Until the RAM prices stabilize, sticking with what you have makes more sense.

If you don't need the bleeding edge performance, AM4 is a perfectly viable option. Plus, who knows when AM6 will even hit the market? You might get a great deal on AM4 parts now that will serve you well until then.

Yes, AM4 is still performing fantastically for many tasks. I’ve been on Ryzen 5600 and it’s serving me until I decide on my next big upgrade.

I’m with you! If you can snag some good deals on AM4 right now, it could keep you going while you wait for the dust to settle on AM5 and AM6.

Using a 'dead' platform isn’t a deal-killer. A good AM4 setup can last you five years or more without any issues, just like my Intel setup did before I made the switch.

Building on AM4 is definitely a smart move if you're looking to save money. It’s still an excellent platform and should last you until at least AM6, especially since you won't be using top tier parts anyway.
