Hey everyone! I recently got a great deal on a 1TB Gen 4 NVMe (WD Blue SN5000). Right now, I'm using a 1TB Gen 3 NVMe (Samsung 970 Evo Pro) in my only Gen 4 slot on my ASUS ROG Strix B550-F WiFi motherboard. I know the performance differences won't be extremely noticeable, but I'm excited to tinker! I'd like to install the new SSD in the Gen 4 slot and move the Samsung drive (currently my C drive) to the Gen 3 slot. Can anyone provide tips or a guide on the best way to clone my current setup? I want the WD Blue to be my main drive for all my programs and games. I've backed up my important files, but I'd prefer not to redo my entire setup since I just did a fresh install last weekend. This is my first PC, and I'm viewing it as a learning opportunity!

You can use Clonezilla or Macrium Reflect to clone everything from your old drive to the new one. After cloning, just make sure to set the new drives as your first boot priority. Honestly, as you mentioned, this might not yield a huge difference in performance, since the 970 Evo is already a solid SSD, but it’s great that you want to learn through this process!
If you want to keep it clean, install the new drive in the Gen 3 slot first and clone your old data while leaving your boot drive untouched. Once you've cloned it, swap them around in the slots, then update your BIOS to make sure the new drive is first in the boot order. Also, remember to disconnect the old drive after the first boot from the new drive to avoid any boot entry issues. It’ll make things easier in the long run!
I’ve done a setup like this a few times. Just install both drives in their respective slots and use Clonezilla to copy your old drive to the new one. After that, ensure you're booting from the new drive. The tricky part is just removing or installing all the hardware!
Honestly, you might not need to worry too much about cloning. The Gen 3 speeds are still excellent for your OS and applications. Maybe just use the Gen 4 SSD for games and leave the Samsung as is.
Check the manufacturer's website for free cloning software. Sometimes they provide tools that make it super easy to transfer your data. It's worth a look!
