How to Handle Remote Desktop Issues with Free MS Accounts?

I'm currently supporting a small financial consulting firm that relies on RDP sessions provided by their clients to manage sensitive data. These clients are understandably cautious about data security, which is why RDP is used. The firm has been around since '94 and mostly sticks to traditional methods. I've recently taken over IT support after the previous tech left. Now, with the new 24H2 updates rolling out, I've noticed significant instability with the old Remote Desktop—it's constantly refreshing connections on updated PCs, while those that haven't updated are fine. I also introduced them to the new 'Orange' Remote Desktop app, but it lacks printer sharing capabilities, which is a major concern since that feature is crucial for their workflow. Adding to the trouble, they are on free Microsoft accounts, which restricts us from managing devices properly, blocking updates, or using certain features effectively. I'm looking for any advice or solutions to stabilize their RDP connection or alternative routes they could take!

You might want to consider forcing the old RDP client to use TCP instead of UDP, as it's often more stable for these kinds of connections. Also, have a look at Microsoft's newer RDP app from the App Store—it's been working well for others!

Honestly, the instability you’re experiencing doesn’t seem like an RDP issue per se. I’ve got a bunch of clients using the old RDP without any hiccups. It might be some other factor at play here.

I haven't noticed any RDP problems with the newer updates. Maybe it’s something specific to your setup? It could also be worth looking into disabling UDP on your RDP host to see if that helps.

They definitely need to upgrade to paid licensing. Free accounts have too many limitations, especially when handling sensitive data.

It's pretty risky for a business to operate on free MS accounts while relying on RDP. I'd recommend considering Business Premium licensing along with services like SharePoint and Purview to improve overall functionality and security.
