I'm trying to configure my Mac Mini to enter a proper sleep mode that saves power and can be awakened by pressing a key and entering my password or PIN. Right now, it only turns off the monitor, but the Mac stays on and doesn't lock. Any tips on how to get this set up? Thanks!

To help with that, could you share more details? Are you using an Apple keyboard or something else? What connection type are you using—HDMI or USB-C? Also, what version of macOS are you on?
Try using CMD+OPT+S to put your Mac to sleep, or you can create your own keyboard shortcut in the keyboard settings. Another option is to set up a Hot Corner for sleep mode!

For those unsure, you can find Hot Corners in the Settings under Desktop. Just a pro tip: hold down CMD or CMD+OPT while selecting a Hot Corner action to avoid accidentally activating it while you're working!
