Is My SSD Failing or Can I Fix It?

I've been having issues with my Samsung 870 EVO 1TB SSD. It's been really hit or miss when I start my PC; sometimes it doesn't work at all. Disk Management recognizes it but insists I need to initialize it, which fails when I try. On top of that, it doesn't show up in File Explorer, though the BIOS can detect it when it isn't functioning. I've changed the SATA port, swapped cables, and even tried an external drive bay, but nothing seems to fix the problem. Oddly enough, it sometimes starts working again after a few hours. I'm seeing repeated errors like 'vds fails to write boot code' and 'the device has a bad block, event ID 7.' I ran a chkdisk and it shows that the drive has no bad sectors but that there is a significant amount of free space. I'm really unsure whether this is a dying drive or if there's something I can do to salvage it.

First and foremost, make sure you have a backup of any important data on that drive if you haven’t done so already! I recommend running the Samsung Disk Utility to check the health of the SSD. Tools like chkdsk are pretty basic and may not give you all the insights you need. Also, look into the error messages you've seen; they may provide clues about whether it’s time to consider a replacement.

Just to add to that, I ran an extended test using the Samsung software and noticed a critical 'uncorrectable error count' of 99 and an 'ECC error rate' of 199. These errors suggest that something's definitely wrong with the drive. It’s best to avoid writing any new data to it and start thinking about either data recovery options or replacing the SSD.
